Boomers Starting Their Own Business is on the Rise

The Plain Dealer out of Cleveland, Ohio had an article today about a growing number of boomers starting their own businesses in the wake of the economic downturn. Many are starting their own business out of necessity – they’ve lost their long-term, high-paying job and have bills to pay – while others are having trouble finding work easily and some have just always wanted a second career.

In 2009, start-up activity among jobless managers and executives reached a four-year high, up 69 percent from 2008. Self-employment among people 55+ also grew, while self-employment for other age groups declined. Entrepreneurship can seem quite daunting, but many rather decide their own fate, rather than leave it up a company.

This year the Florida Boomer Lifestyle Conference is hosting a pre-conference workshop on career reinvention. So, if you’ve been thinking about taking a plunge into entrepreneurship, exploring a franchise, or starting a new career for yourself, you don’t want to miss this workshop. You’ll get the tips and techniques you need to re-tool for the brave new world of career transitioning after 50.

Register for the pre-conference workshop, “How to Live, Survive and Thrive in the New Gig Economy” here.
